An Overview of Geoengineering of Climate using Stratospheric Sulfate Aerosols
نویسندگان
چکیده
1 We provide an overview of geoengineering by stratospheric sulfate aerosols. We review the state of understanding 2 about this topic as of early 2008, summarizing the past 30 years of work in the area, and highlight some very recent 3 studies using general circulation models of the atmosphere and ocean, and discuss the efficacy of producing such 4 aerosols by methods used to deliver sulfur species to the stratosphere. 5 The studies reviewed here all suggest that sulfate aerosols can counteract the globally averaged temperature 6 increase associated with increasing greenhouse gases, and reduce changes to some other components of the earth 7 system. There are likely to be remaining regional climate changes after geoengineering, with some regions expe8 riencing significant changes in temperature or precipitation. The aerosols also serve as surfaces for heterogeneous 9 chemistry resulting in increased ozone depletion for several decades. We conclude by highlighting many of the 10 areas where more research is needed. 11

Assessing the direct occupational and public health impacts of solar radiation management with stratospheric aerosols
Geoengineering is the deliberate large-scale manipulation of environmental processes that affects the Earth's climate, in an attempt to counteract the effects of climate change. Injecting sulfate aerosol precursors and designed nanoparticles into the stratosphere to (i.e., solar radiation management [SRM]), has been suggested as one approach to geoengineering. Although much is being done to unr...
متن کاملStratospheric dynamics and midlatitude jets under geoengineering with space mirrors and sulfate and titania aerosols
The impact on the dynamics of the stratosphere of three approaches to geoengineering by solar radiation management is investigated using idealized simulations of a global climate model. The approaches are geoengineering with sulfate aerosols, titania aerosols, and reduction in total solar irradiance (representing mirrors placed in space). If it were possible to use stratospheric aerosols to cou...
متن کاملRegional climate responses to geoengineering with tropical and Arctic SO2 injections
[1] Anthropogenic stratospheric aerosol production, so as to reduce solar insolation and cool Earth, has been suggested as an emergency response to geoengineer the planet in response to global warming. While volcanic eruptions have been suggested as innocuous examples of stratospheric aerosols cooling the planet, the volcano analog actually argues against geoengineering because of ozone depleti...

متن کاملAn overview of the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP)
[1] The GeoengineeringModel Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP) was designed to determine robust climate system model responses to solar geoengineering. GeoMIP currently consists of four standardized simulations involving reduction of insolation or increased amounts of stratospheric sulfate aerosols. Three more experiments involving marine cloud brightening are planned. This project has improved c...
